Hitachi Station, located on the Joban Line of JR East and facing the Pacific Ocean, serves as the central station of Hitachi City. The current station building, completed in 2011, boasts an impressive all-glass design, crafted under the guidance of renowned Hitachi-born architect Kazuyo Sejima, a winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize in Architecture.” The building earned the Good Design Award in 2012 and the Brunel Award for Excellence in 2014, a prestigious international design competition for railroads.
At the eastern end of the walkway, the observation hall offers a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean. The unobstructed horizon provides an exceptional vista that changes throughout the day, from the morning sunrise to the midday blue expanse. A popular café, extending from the walkway deck, opens at 7:00 a.m. Additionally, since 2019, the “Eki Piano” has been installed, inviting visitors to play and enjoy the music.
